restoration

D.L. George offers an array of restoration services that are second to none. Our 17,000 square foot premises are home to a team of skilled craftsmen who merge old-world service and state-of-the-art capacity.

Our advantage is clear. The various elements of our restoration process—from mechanical to body to trim—are fully integrated. Problem-solving is efficient and effective; we maintain a "100% can-do" approach to challenges unique to your project.

We have the utmost respect for your car's heritage, and make every effort to preserve its originality. We source original parts worldwide and fabricate parts to period specifications from original documentation. Restoration work is supplemented throughout with careful research; we maintain a vast library and global resource network.

Applying uncommon expertise, meticulous attention to detail, and extensive in-house capability, our goal is to provide you with a historic motorcar far greater than the sum of its parts.

Mechanical

Components for vintage sports cars can be both complex and rare. We have extensive experience with obscure marques and a rich understanding of pre-war automotive construction. We are proficient in all aspects of engine restoration.

Our expertise includes chassis restoration and engineering, gearboxes, drivelines, differentials, suspension, supercharging systems, and beyond. We offer full wiring services, for an efficient and pristine electrical system, as well as rebuilding services for electrical systems, as well as rebuilding services for magnetos, generators, and distributors. For endurance events, we have developed solutions for adapting modern starters, alternators, and fuel components to enhance reliability without forfeiting aesthetics.

We have an in-house crack testing facility for ferrous and non-ferrous metals. All stress components are tested before being refitted to your car.

We are proud to offer you a rare combination of authenticity and durability in our mechanical work. Unlike some restoration shops, we cut no corners; such shortcuts compromise a car, our integrity, and your safety. We require a much higher standard; after all, your car requires a much higher level of performance.

Machining

The standard of excellence in our machine shop began with D.L. George, Sr., who retired from the aerospace industry and brought his skills to the newly-established D.L. George Coachworks. In the years that followed, we built on that expertise.

Our fully-outfitted machine shop offers precision machining to the highest tolerances. We are capable of repairing and reclaiming original parts that are worn or damaged, and we efficiently fabricate and save components that would stall a project at other shops. Our trained engineers can fabricate anything from a gear or shaft to an aesthetic element.

We have an in-house crack testing facility for ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as hardness testing, metal cleaning, vibratory service, and machine polishing.

Panel & Paint

Old-world coach-builders adhered to a level of artistry and craftsmanship incomparable to today's world of assembly lines and mass production. Each workshop had its signature style, and each car it produced was a unique representation of that style.

These qualities have endured setting your historic motorcar apart; they are a tangible and personal connection to a bygone era. We have profound respect for the workmanship of this era and strive to maintain those standards in our panel shop.

Above all, we seek to preserve the originality of your car's coachwork wherever possible. Our careful repair work gives new life to old panels and is undetectable in the final finish.

If body pieces are beyond repair or non-existent, we offer a rare combination of skill, talent, and expertise to shape metal into even the most complex forms and styles of the old masters. We pay special attention to accurate gapping for perfect panel fit and overall purity of lines.

We take great care in each layer of the finishing process, from bare metal to final polish, as shortcuts or compromise at any point along the way will invariably appear in the finish. All paint is mixed in-house, using modem technology to match original colors precisely.

Rally & race preparation

Racing makes greater demands of your historic motorcar, and the right attention to it beforehand is critical. We seek to maximize your car’s performance, while taking the utmost care for its preservation and your safety.

We offer a full range of race preparation services to tune your car for the many types of events open to vintage racers, and to ensure it complies with technical and safety requirements specific to each event.

Beyond the mechanical considerations, we understand that taking your car to the races can pose a formidable challenge. We offer unique insight from years of event participation to help you with application processes, licensing, car accreditation, and transportation required for events both domestic and abroad.

event support

When you’re finally off to the races, you may want added assurance that your car will run at its full potential. We are pleased to offer event support services to our clients. As your crew, we work on-site to monitor your car’s performance, tend to its maintenance, and address technical issues that may arise over the hundreds - even thousands - of miles of peak performance that vintage racing events often demand of your car. You’ll have greater freedom to focus on your driving and to enjoy everything the venue has to offer.
